SUMMARY:Piano Recital: Philip Clouts with Ron Phelan
DESCRIPTION:This event has sold out, email info@arundells.org ( mailto:info@arundells.org ) to be added to a waiting list\nCape Town born pianist and composer Philip Clouts’ South African roots have led him on a voyage of discovery, soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett.\nThe Philip Clouts Quartet has been a major focus of his composing and playing, with the latest album ‘Umoya’ titled from the Zulu word for ‘life force’. Philip has played at Ronnie Scott’s, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Glastonbury Festival. His music has been played on BBC’s Jamie Cullum Show, and Jazz FM has praised it, saying “it has a very infectious feel-good quality.”\n\nAccompanied by exceptional double bassist Ron Phelan, this intimate performance will take place in the drawing room at Arundells on Sir Edward Heath’s beloved Steinway piano. Alongside Philip’s compositions, they’ll present jazz pieces by the likes of Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer.\n\n“Clouts has particularly subtle judgement when it comes to harmonising simple melodies, making them neither too bare nor over-elaborate.” The Observer\n“A gospel-powered earthiness emerges in the relaxed funkiness of his piano solo” The Guardian\n“The best of British jazz” Jazz FM\nDate: Wednesday 8 October\nTime: Doors from 18.30, music begins 19.00\nWhere: Arundells, 59 The Close, Salisbury\n\nTicket Options:\nStandard Ticket – £30.00 to include a glass of bubbles\nSupport Young Musicians Ticket – £60\nBy choosing this ticket, you’ll be paying double the standard price — with the extra amount going directly towards funding free piano lessons for local children from lower-income families, who might not otherwise have access to private music tuition. These lessons take place on Sir Edward Heath’s treasured Steinway grand piano, offering young learners the inspiring experience of playing a world-class instrument as they develop their skills. Your generosity helps us keep this unique and valuable programme alive.\n\n\nDue to space restrictions tickets are extremely limited, book early to avoid disappointment.\n\nAll tickets are non refundable but you are very welcome to pass them on to friends or family if you are unable to attend.\n\n
