SUMMARY:George Stubbs and the Tyrants of the Jungle
DESCRIPTION:In his own lifetime, Stubbs was as famous for his lions as his horses. The artist combined scientific enquiry, truthfulness to nature and an extraordinary technical skill and patience to create sometimes endearing, sometimes terrifying images of wild animals.\nHe worked closely with the leading zoologists of his day to make portraits of famous animals: moose, yak, royal lions and leopards and the Queen’s zebra. An obsessive experimenter, Stubbs invented new techniques in oil, enamel and print to capture their playful charm and fearful symmetry.\n\nAmina Wright is a curator, lecturer and author with over three decades of experience as a curator of historic art collections and exhibitions. She has produced several major exhibitions on eighteenth-century British Art and Old Masters and published and lectured widely in these areas.\nIn 2023, she completed a unique new museum, the Auckland Project’s Faith Museum in County Durham.\nDate: Wednesday 3 June\nTime: 2pm\nWhere: Arundells\nTickets: £16\nAll tickets are non refundable but you are very welcome to pass them on to friends or family if you are unable to attend.\n
