SUMMARY:Nelson Mandela: How to Build a Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Few political figures are as recognisable or influential as Nelson Mandela. In this talk, Professor Christopher Prior explores how Mandela came to embody one of the defining political and humanitarian causes of the twentieth century.\nBeyond the familiar story lies a broader question: how did Mandela come to represent a movement that resonated around the world? Looking behind the scenes, Professor Prior considers the factors that explain Mandela’s rise from anti-apartheid activist and political prisoner to becoming the figurehead of the struggle against apartheid.\nAbout the Speaker\n\nProfessor Christopher Prior is Professor of Colonial and Postcolonial History at the University of Southampton, specialising in the history of modern Africa and the legacies of empire.\nHis publications include The Ndebele, Frank Oates, and Knowledge Production in the 1870s: Encounters at the Edge of Empire (with Joe Higgins, 2025). He is currently completing a book on British government policy in Africa during the 1960s, in the era following the end of empire.\nEvent Details\nDate: Tuesday 23 March\nTime: Doors open at 7.00pm; talk begins at 7.30pm\nWhere: Arundells, 59 The Close, Salisbury, SP1 2EN\nTickets: £18\nTickets are non-refundable but you are very welcome to pass them on to friends or family if you are unable to attend.\n
