Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday for our Lunchtime Concert with the Wessex Folk Orchestra in the Arundells garden.

The weather was certainly on our side. It was a warm summer’s day, but the welcome shade of the marquee and a gentle breeze created the perfect setting for a relaxed afternoon of music. We were delighted to welcome around 50 visitors, many of whom brought picnics and refreshments to enjoy while listening to the performance.

The Wessex Folk Orchestra treated us to a wonderfully varied programme of traditional country dance music, drawing on historic collections including Playford’s Compleat Dance, the Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen family tune books, alongside more recent compositions. Their performance was warmly received throughout, with appreciative applause following each piece.

A particular highlight was the engaging commentary from the orchestra’s leader, William Shering. His introductions brought each piece to life, blending fascinating historical background with personal anecdotes from his own musical experiences and explaining his connection to many of the works performed. His stories added another dimension to an already enjoyable concert, helping audiences appreciate both the music and the traditions behind it.

It was a pleasure to see so many people relaxing in the beautiful surroundings of the Arundells garden, enjoying an afternoon of live music in such a special setting. Events like these are a wonderful reminder of how our gardens can be enjoyed as a place to gather, unwind and experience live performance.
