Britain, Europe and the Atlantic Alliance

Edward Heath’s Old World, New Horizons in the Trump Era

Photo: Prime Minister Edward Heath welcomes Queen Elizabeth II, President Richard Nixon and Pat Nixon at Chequers during an official visit in the early 1970s.

Sixty years after Edward Heath delivered his landmark Harvard lectures, the questions they addressed remain as relevant as ever. Published as Old World, New Horizons, they set out Heath’s vision of Britain’s place in Europe and the importance of the transatlantic partnership between Europe and the United States.

In an era shaped by Brexit, renewed uncertainty in US-European relations, growing geopolitical rivalry and international conflict, how should Britain define its role in the world?

In this timely lecture, Dr Daniel Furby will revisit Heath’s ideas and explore what they can tell us about some of today’s most pressing international questions, from Britain’s relationship with the European Union and the future of NATO to the shifting balance of global power. Drawing on his research into Heath’s foreign policy legacy, Dr Furby will examine whether Heath’s vision of a strong Europe working alongside the United States still offers a guide to navigating an increasingly uncertain world.
