Much More than Merely Matchstick Men: The Profound Art of L. S. Lowry

Lowry’s popularity in Britain is long established and almost universal; even those who claim not to like modern art often make an exception for this artist’s distinctive style. However, Lowry’s eccentric characters and unexpected compositions reflect a life lived on the edge of others’ worlds. A keen observer of the bustling streets of Manchester, he transformed everyday scenes into works of remarkable character and insight, yet remained something of a loner throughout his life. This talk explores his life and distinctive vision, examining the inspiration he found in the streets of the city that fascinated him throughout his long career. Lowry’s own character, and those of his subjects, still shine through his art today. Wry amusement is never more than a brushstroke away from wistful solitude.

Richard Kay read Art History at the University of St Andrews, beginning his career at Sotheby’s in 1987. For nearly nine years, he worked across their salerooms in Chester, Sussex and London, focusing on British and European pictures and prints. He then became an Associate Director at Phillips, overseeing picture sales and valuations, before joining Lawrences in Crewkerne in 1999. He became a Director of that firm in 2005 and remained there until joining Woolley and Wallis in 2025. Richard is a regular lecturer, sharing his enthusiasm for subjects ranging from the Mona Lisa to Modernism. He contributed articles to Antique Collecting magazine for over 25 years.
