The Morning Cloud Sailing Talks 2023
Join us for the 2023 Annual Morning Cloud Sailing Talks at Sarum College where we have two fantastic speakers lined up: Peter Forbes will share stories of a sailing life, from early beginnings to more ambitious things. Andrew Campbell will discuss a tense period of five days at the mid-point of WWII.
Peter Forbes
Peter learnt to sail a Felucca on the River Nile when he was 8 years old. Much later in life, on board a 2006 Amel 54 cutter rigged Ketch sailing yacht, which he bought from Sr. Rudi Peroni, the Italian beer magnate, he set out on a circumnavigation of the world.
The Sales agent for Peroni was Riza Cagdas Cakir, the Chief Operating Officer of EMEK Marin based in Gocek, Turkey. Peter first met Riza on that occasion, and subsequently trusted him to undertake some major modification and improvement work on this yacht, named “Carango”. This included an EMEK designed custom built solar arch at the stern, an SSB radio installation, an AIS installation, a Fleet Broadband installation, and life raft installation. In addition, major servicing work was carried out on the complete range of winches, windlasses, electric sail reefing and outhaul motors, watermaker, Volvo propulsion engine and the Onan generator. All this was done over a period of a year, before the circumnavigation began.
Peter is a current member of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
Andrew Campbell
“Five days in August” is the story of Operation Pedestal, and the relief of Malta in August 1942, concentrating on the survival of the tanker “Ohio” and the extraordinary courage of those who brought her, with her decks awash, into Grand Harbour.
