An Evening with Woolley & Wallis at Arundells

Explore the treasures of Arundells’ diverse collection in a fascinating evening set within our beautiful gardens. We are delighted to welcome three leading specialists from the renowned local auctioneers, Woolley and Wallis, a Salisbury institution since 1884, who will offer insightful talks providing a fresh perspective on the art and history housed within Sir Edward Heath’s former home:

• Hear from John Axford, Chairman and Head of Asian Art, on the fascinating world of Chinese ceramics.
• Explore the beauty and intricacies of Japanese art with Alexandra Aguilar, Head of the Japanese Art Department and familiar face from BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.
• Discover the hidden histories within the paintings at Arundells with specialist Ed Beer.

Following the talks, there will be a Q&A session with the experts.

The Speakers

John Axford is Chairman of Woolley and Wallis, and Head of the Asian Art Department.  He joined Woolley and Wallis in 1993, after studying Fine Art, sculpture and drawing at Leeds University, gaining a first-class honours degree. In 2005, John discovered an exceptional Yuan dynasty blue and white gourd vase from the Alexander collection, which he sold for £3,000,000, the first time the million pound mark had been passed by any UK regional auctioneer.

Alexandra Aguilar joined Woolley and Wallis in 2012. She is an auctioneer, Asian Art specialist and Head of the Japanese Art Department, which she founded in 2018. As well as continuing to hold successful sales, Alexandra is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Art Scholars and appears on the BBC Antiques Roadshow as an Asian Art specialist.

Ed Beer studied History of Art at the University of Bristol before starting work for a London picture dealer, specialising in Old Master and 19th Century British, European and Russian paintings. He joined Woolley & Wallis in 2019 as a paintings specialist.

Woolley and Wallis was founded in 1884, it holds thirty specialist sales a year, spread between nine departments headed up by leading experts in their field. The saleroom prides itself on combining a high level of expertise and professionalism, with the friendly attitude and personal service that clients have come to expect from this long-standing firm.
