Over recent weeks, Arundells has hosted a series of thought-provoking talks exploring some of the most pressing issues of our time. Bringing together leading figures with first-hand experience at the highest levels of public life, these events have offered Salisbury audiences a valuable opportunity to engage directly with complex global issues in a considered and open forum.

We were delighted to welcome Lord George Robertson for a wide-ranging address on Britain’s security in an increasingly uncertain world. Drawing on his experience as both UK Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson spoke with authority on defence policy, international alliances, and the shifting geopolitical landscape. The event attracted a full audience and an unusual degree of national media attention, reflecting the urgency and relevance of the themes discussed. While such attention is not typical for our programme, it was encouraging to see such strong engagement with an event rooted in informed public dialogue.

This was followed by a visit from Lord Kim Darroch, former UK Ambassador to the United States, whose talk offered a candid and insightful perspective on diplomacy, global instability, and the evolving nature of international relations. Drawing on his years at the centre of UK–US relations, Lord Darroch reflected on the challenges of navigating an increasingly unpredictable political environment, and the importance of maintaining strong alliances in a period of global uncertainty. The discussion resonated strongly with the audience, prompting thoughtful questions and lively conversation.

Most recently, we welcomed Dr Madeleine Sumption MBE, Director of the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, for a lecture examining the purpose and complexities of immigration policy. Her talk stood out for its clarity and balance on a subject that so often provokes polarised debate. By focusing on the “levers” available to policymakers, and the economic and moral choices they entail, Dr Sumption provided a framework for understanding the trade-offs inherent in immigration policy, without advocating for particular outcomes. The audience engaged deeply with the subject, and the discussion that followed was notable for its respectful and considered tone.

Across all three events, a common thread has been the value of creating space for thoughtful, evidence-based discussion. At a time when public discourse can often feel fragmented or adversarial, these evenings have demonstrated the appetite for nuanced conversation and the importance of engaging with differing perspectives in a constructive way.

At Arundells, we remain committed to providing a platform for speakers from a wide range of backgrounds, spanning politics, history, the arts and beyond, who can inform, challenge and inspire. By enabling local audiences to hear directly from those shaping debate at the highest levels, we hope to contribute in a small but meaningful way to a richer public conversation.

We look forward to continuing this programme in the months ahead and to welcoming further distinguished speakers to Salisbury.
